The KnowledgePoints Learning Centers commissioned an independent consultant to evaluate the effectiveness of our study programs for all students who have completed 40 tutoring lessons. The graph below shows the pre tutoring and post tutoring results. In relation to school semesters in which students received about 90 hours of instruction in reading or math, students in KnowledgePoints programs achieved more than a full year of growth in less than half that time. Questions and Answers Who and what are the benefits of Choice Learning at KnowledgePoints? Schools benefit because they can provide an alternative avenue for students to recover credits. They no longer have to worry about scheduling conflicts, and have another option with which to provide students who are expelled or home/hospital-bound. Due to this increased flexibility, school’s graduation rates can increase and decrease its dropout rates. Also, because the courses are taught by highly-qualified teachers, schools can continue to meet NCLB requirements. In other words, it is an “extension” for schools, offering the courses, teachers, and scheduling flexibility they need to ensure that ALL of their students succeed. Students benefit because they can catch up on failed classes on their own time, or earn a high school diploma without having to attend a traditional brick-and-mortar campus. Students may receive more one-on-one help because they are not competing with a classroom of 30 other students. For those students who need to recover credit, KnowledgePoints can assess student capabilities in specific subject areas, so he/she is not wasting time re-learning concepts that have already be mastered. Parents benefit because they have another means for their child to accelerate, recover credits or earn a diploma. All hope is not lost if their child gets suspended from school or needs that extra class to look great on a college application; KnowledgePoints has the answer. What is included when a person purchases a course through KnowledgePoints? Students will have access to:
What activities will occur when a student takes a course at KnowledgePoints? It is the suggested the following activities are routinely completed by the students for best performance:
How does a student taking one course and attending a public school have this course recognized on their transcript? Because our partner, Blue Ridge, has met accreditation standards set by CITA, SACS, and NAAS, other accredited schools are required to accept the credits. Parents are encouraged to check with the student’s home school to ensure that the credits will be accepted. Since certain courses require verification or SOLs, what are the implications for taking courses at KnowledgePoints? If a student is enrolled in a public school in Virginia and takes a course requiring verification and SOL test, the student will be notified by the school district that an SOL test must be taken to have the credit verified. An SOL test will be scheduled by the school Full-time students of KnowledgePoints are not required to take SOL tests. When they complete their high school requirements, they will receive a transcript through KnowledgePoints partner, which meets the is accreditation standards set by CITA, SACS, and NAAS If a student is a full-time student, how are credits recognized? Our partner, Blue Ridge, will grant a transcript, which is recognized at colleges and universities. Our partner has met accreditation standards set by CITA, SACS, and NAAS; hence other accredited schools are required to accept the credits. What is the process for enrolling so parents will know exactly what needs to happen before they can register? The Director of Learning of KnowledgePoints assists parents and students by explaining the benefits of Choice Learning. The Director can assist parents and/or student in the selection of a single course. He/she will assist in the completion of the necessary documentation to enroll in the course. Once the documentation is reviewed and payment received, student will receive a user name and password. Based on the course option selected, student will start course work with a combination of structured-supervision in the learning center and home-based-work. For students working towards a high school diploma, KnowledgePoints requires the student’s transcript, which will be reviewed by the Registrar. Once the transcript is received, the Guidance Counselor will create a course of study for the student to follow. Students will then be enrolled in their course(s) and the necessary login and course information will be provided by the Director of Learning. Details of the contact information for the Remote on-line Teacher will be provided. For additional information, student may consult the Student Guide. Do the starting and completion time of courses at KnowledgePoints coincide with the dates of the public school system in Virginia? No. A student can start at any time for a single course or become a full-time student. All courses are self-paced although the average time to complete a course is 90 hours. It may take more or less time depending on the pre-requisite knowledge of the student. Considering 18 weeks plus and additional week at the end of each quarter for study material and exam administration, the course would be finished in 22 weeks. This means that a student could complete two consecutive courses in 45 to 50 weeks. A student could complete two years in one calendar year by coming to KnowledgePoints. On an average, it is suggested that if a student works one hour per day on a course for 5 days per week that he/she will complete in 18 weeks. It is suggested that the student plan a week for review of material and taking the exam administered after each quarter of the study material. Are there finance options available for parents? Yes. KnowledgePoints provides financing options through Universal Guardian Acceptance (UGA) for parents wishing to use these options. More information can be provided by the Director of Learning. ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Under the proposal for the immigration reform bill, there will be a requirement for English certification for citizenship. Seven Steps to Homework Success Ways to help your child get the most from homework - and
maybe even enjoy it Review the teacher's expectations with your child and hold your child
accountable by identifying areas of weakness. Ensure that your
child establishes time to address these problem areas every night
by reviewing previously taught concepts. If you have concerns
after regular observation, contact the teacher immediately. This
process will demonstrate to your child that you are a concerned parent
and taking an active role in your child's future. The Theory of Multiple Intelligence suggests there are 7 different types of learners. It is important to understand that each child has a different approach to learning, which will have a significant impact on their chosen career. These intelligences include linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, interpersonal, spatial etc. Depending on their intelligence type, you should adjust your approach to helping your child. Learning may be easier from pictures or charts as compared to reading instructions or demonstrate a concept by moving objects from one side to the other (i.e. solving a math problem). Your child needs a calendar in their work area to record dates, when
assignments are given and their due dates. This helps your child track
what is due and when. It adds accountability to the process and teaches
time management. Interactive quizzes and study games take studying to the next level
and help ensure your child absorbs what is being studied. An example
of a fun math game is "24 Double Digit" available from www.bookwormplantation.com
(Bookworm Plantation). Flash cards can also be useful for learning
vocabulary or math facts. Discuss school and learning activities every day. Getting to know your child's classmates and their parents will help you build a solid network of support and volunteer in the classroom, at book fairs, science fairs, plays or sporting events. On the weekends, take your child to visit museums, parks, zoos and science centers. Use Positive Reinforcement A reward-based motivation system provides your child with incentives based on performance, effort and completion of homework. Great rewards include a night at the movies, dinner at a special restaurant or a new book. Once the rules of your system are determined, apply the system consistently. Notice Struggles Try to answer the following questions about your child's study behavior: How often is my child struggling with homework? What subject(s) is my child struggling with? Does my child enjoy school and is he or she excited about it? Use the information, which you have gathered to find solutions that best meet your child's needs. Work with your child to develop a corrective action plan and discuss your plan with the teacher. Should your child lack the basic skills needed to complete assignments, or needs enrichment, there are professional tutoring services available in your community with the resources to help your child achieve his or her academic goals. Homework has the power to bring children, parents, and teachers together with a common goal to improve student learning. With these seven steps, parents can help build a foundation for success in school, which will become the cornerstone to excellent study habits required to accelerate through high school and life. Start the implementation of good homework habits today; it will make a powerful impact on your child's future success.
